Invertebrates-
Red and blue legged hermit crabs, starfish, skunk cleaner shrimp, snails, and sand- sifting sea cucumbers make up the reef’s cleanup crew. The hermit crabs feed on leftover food particles in the nooks and crannies of the rock, while the snails keep everything free of algae. The skunk cleaner shrimp constantly cleans the fish of parasites, and also forages for food scraps. The sand is kept clean by the sand sifting sea cucumber which ingests sand, cleans it of waste, and then excretes clean sand in the end. Also included in this category are the clams, feather dusters, tunicates, and the rose anemone.

Refugium-
The refugium for Dylan’s 90 gallon reef aquarium is a smaller aquarium plumbed into the sump underneath the main tank. The benefits of this are increased water volume for pollution dillution, along with a predator-free preserve for plankton growth. It’s also a great place to frag corals, and to grow marine plants for nitrate and phosphate removal.
